‘Ratchet’ Lyrics, Jonny Goodman

Ratchet

Well, this plane’s left the dock and this ship has flown
And now a girl I’ve loved is just a girl I’ve known
It all makes just about as little sense as
Anything else I’ve tried not to understand, but I do
Like why did we etch our memory in the sand?

Oh, we all like to turn a screw or two to the left
In our necks once in a while
Take it all in my two lungs, yeah,
Panorama breaths of air while we’re still young,
She knows I’d love to come along, if I could
So, I’m taking a ratchet to my age…
Gonna turn it round and round and
Up and down until it feels just right

She comes through in the warmth of this guitar
Yeah, but it hasn’t done a damn good thing
To bring her back so far, and she gets a little dimmer,
Just like scratches turn to scars, but never go away
Not so easily, no, not at all

It seems the little things mean much more,
The bigger the man I am, the smaller words and movements
She makes to untangle my knotted heart strings
I hope she knows that there’s still some ways I would move her

Words are not for speaking, words are just for when we’re quiet
Quiet isn’t secret, quiet’s just what makes us red
Red is not a color, red is just some shade of love, and
Love is not a feeling, love is just what makes us move the way we move

And she gets a little dimmer, just like scratches turn to scars,
But never go away, not so easily, not at all

Only two things I’ve got pictures of are
A girl I know and a girl I love,
Take it all in my two eyes, and I find
It takes a bigger man not to get paralyzed
Realizing you can’t translate sight into touch
Oh, and touch is not a sense,
It’s a reason to hold on to somebody
‘Til they feel that they’re no one, for just a moment
But the only picture in your head… and

She comes through in the warmth of this guitar
Yeah, but it hasn’t done a damn good thing
To bring her back so far, and she gets a little dimmer,
Just like scratches turn to scars, but never go away
Not so easily, no, not at all
